Pain is an unpleasant feeling that is usually caused by an intense or damaging stimulus.  Pain may have one or many causes, but is most commonly due to disease, injury, surgery, or nerve damage.  Most pain resolves once tissues in the body heal, however, often pain will persist even after the body has healed.

Pain is the most common cause of doctor visits in this country as well as worldwide.  In fact, over 50% of emergency room visits and 30% of primary care visits are due to pain.  Some patients may go on to develop chronic pain, typically defined as greater than 3-6 months which can significantly impair their overall health, function and quality of life.
