Vertiflex Superion  (for spinal stenosis)

The physicians of Innovative Pain Specialists may recommend a revolutionary new product, Vertiflex Superion, for your pain related to lumbar spinal stenosis. This is an amazing new treatment that is being offered by only a select group of physicians nationwide.  In fact, Dr. Marsiglia and Dr. Louis were among the first to learn how to use the device.  Moreover, they have seen amazing results in patients suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis where more conservative treatments have failed. This is a minimally invasive technique that is used in order to minimize the need for systemic medications and/or more invasive surgery such as laminectomy with or without lumbar fusion.

  • Vertiflex Superion

  • Until recently, many patients with lumbar spinal stenosis underwent lumbar decompression surgery (laminectomy) for pain related to spinal stenosis.  Even patients who undergo minimally invasive laminectomies by well-qualified spine surgeons have the potential for complications related to this more invasive procedure.  Vertiflex Superion is not without the potential for complications, but it is much less invasive as compared to traditional spinal surgery, as well as minimally invasive laminectomy

  • In patients who have low back and/or leg pain despite physical therapy, medications, epidural steroid injections and other conservative measures, there is new hope.  Vertiflex Superion is a state-of-the-art device in a class of its own in terms of how lumbar spinal stenosis is treated.  This procedure involves the deployment of a small titanium device in between one or two vertebrae to alleviate pain and symptoms related to spinal stenosis.  Patients have been shown to stand more upright, walk for longer distances, and experience less pain with this procedure.  Patients usually achieve a significant improvement their quality of life as well.

  • The procedure takes about 45 minutes and is performed in a surgery center setting.  On the day of the procedure, you will arrive to the surgery center.  An anesthesiologist will assess your overall health and discuss anesthetic technique.  Most patients are sedated for this procedure without the need for general endotracheal anesthesia.  You will then be taken to the operating room and local anesthesia will be administered into the skin of your low back.  Then, a small incision with be made to allow for entry of the components of the device.  The small titanium device is ultimately inserted and deployed under real-time x-ray (fluoroscopy).  This is to allow for proper placement.  Once the titatium Superion device is placed satisfactorily, the incision will be closed with dissolving sutures.  You will be taken to the recovery room and after an appropriate period of time, you will be sent home.  Mosts patient experience relief very quickly.  You will follow up in the clinic with your doctor within 1-2 weeks of the procedure.
