This is a minimally invasive technique that is used in order to minimize the need for more potent opioid medications and/or more invasive surgery.
Omnia Medical Posterior Sacroiliac Fusion (PsiF)
Until recently, many patients with sacroiliac joint pain, mobility and/or dysfunction underwent more invasive fusion surgeries often with larger implanted hardware (titanium or other metallic implants). Now there is an innovative and minimally invasive technology available to those suffering from chronic low back pain due to sacroiliac joint dysfunction.
Approximately 15-25% of patients presenting with chronic low back pain actually have sacroiliac joint (SI joint) dysfunction. In fact, up to 75% of patients who have had a prior lumbar fusion surgery will develop significant SI joint degeneration within 5 years of their lumbar spine surgery.
In patients who have chronic low back pain, it is of utmost importance to FIRST identify the cause of their low back pain. Once your physician determines that your low back pain is due to sacroiliac joint dysfunction, he/she may recommend conservative measures at first. If conservative measures are not successful or do not provide lasting relief, then SI joint fusion may be recommended.
The Omnia Medical Posterior Sacroiliac Joint Fusion procedure is a state-of-the-art procedure. This procedure involves the deployment of a small device into the joint to promote fusion of the joint. Unlike other products which involve placement of several pieces of titanium or other metallic implants, this product is a less invasive technique to promote fusion of the sacroiliac joint. The procedure takes about 45 minutes and is performed in a surgery center setting. On the day of the procedure, you will arrive to the surgery center. An anesthesiologist will assess your overall health and discuss anesthetic technique. Most patients are sedated for this procedure without the need for general endotracheal anesthesia. You will then be taken to the operating room and local anesthesia will be administered into the skin of your low back. Then, a small incision with be made to allow for entry of the components of the device. The small structural allograft (bone graft) is ultimately inserted and deployed under real-time x-ray (fluoroscopy). This is to allow for proper placement. Once the graft is placed satisfactorily, the incision will be closed with dissolving sutures. You will be taken to the recovery room and after an appropriate period of time, you will be sent home. Most patients experience relief quickly. You will follow up in the clinic with your doctor within 1-2 weeks of the procedure.
